How can a physiotherapist help?
A children’s Physiotherapist (PT) aims to assist children to increase their participation in physical activities, and move their bodies to the best of their ability. A physiotherapist supports children to improve their gross motor skills including balance, co-ordination, strength and agility, flexibility, and the way they move in general. Physiotherapist’s can assist with building skills for specific gross motor activities such as riding a bike, ball skills, or assist with the development of specific motor milestones such as rolling, sitting, crawling and walking.
What does a physiotherapy session look like?
Children’s physiotherapy sessions can look like play or a gym workout. The physiotherapist uses fun, developmentally and age-appropriate games and activities to help motivate your child to participate, The games and activities are aimed to work on specific skills. Specific goal activities may also be practiced including riding a bike, swimming or climbing on playground equipment. The physiotherapist will give the child and family specific exercises often disguised as games to do at home or school.
When is it recommended your child see a physiotherapist?
Children’s physiotherapists assist children who are not meeting their gross motor milestones (e.g. rolling, walking, crawling), or wanting to increase their participation in physical activities but have challenges that are stopping them.
